Suurijärvi is a nature reserve and old forest conservation area in Pihtipudas, Finland. Known for its rich ecosystems and quiet forest landscapes, the area forms an important part of the region’s protected natural environment.
Located along the Suurijärvi hiking route, the project introduces a series of carefully positioned pavilions, resting points and a wilderness cabin that support outdoor life without overwhelming the landscape. Together they form a small architectural ensemble embedded within the forest and along the shoreline.
Rather than creating a single dominant structure, the design unfolds as a sequence of places along the trail. Arrival through the forest. Transition along the boardwalk. Pause by the fire. Rest by the water or inside the cabin. Each location offers a slightly different way of experiencing the surrounding landscape and its ecosystems.
The design approach was guided by the sensitivity of the site. All structures are designed so they can be dismantled and relocated if necessary. They are carefully positioned among existing trees, rock formations and shoreline conditions, allowing the terrain to remain largely untouched. Elevated timber paths protect delicate ground while guiding movement naturally through the forest.
The project reinterprets traditional Finnish wilderness shelters through a contemporary architectural approach. It supports the simple rituals of being in nature — walking, sitting, cooking, observing and resting — while allowing the landscape itself to remain the primary experience
